Planning a renovation? Get your electrician in early

Electrical work is easy to get wrong on a renovation timeline — not because it is mysterious, but because it has to happen before walls, ceilings and floors go back. Call the electrician at design stage, not when the plasterer is booked.

Why early planning is cheaper

Power points, lighting circuits and switchboard capacity are cheap to move on a plan and expensive once the room is finished. Chasing a missed oven circuit or a home-office run through new plaster is the cost you were trying to avoid.

Worth locking in before the walls close

• Whether the existing switchboard can take new kitchen circuits, ducted AC or an EV charger
• Lighting layout — downlights, pendants, outside, and switches that match how you walk the house
• Extra outlets in kitchens, desks and entertainment walls (you will not have too many)
• Data points if you want wired internet, not just Wi-Fi through new walls

A short site visit or a markup on the drawings is enough to stop the usual surprises. We work with your builder’s sequence so first-fix happens when the walls are still open.
